The Pinnacles, Coromandel

This Sunday we walked up to the Pinnacles in the Coromandel. As you can see in the pictures the track is cut out of the rock at some place. This track was used by Kauri loggers to provide the camps with supplies.
Part of the track was also used to transport logs, but most of them were washed down after opening the many dams. See here for more info: KAURI

Afgelopen zondag zijn we de Pinnacles opgeklommen in de Coromandel. In de foto's kun je zien dat de track voor een gedeelte uitgehouwen is in de rotsen. Dit pad werd door Kauri bosbouwers gebruikt om de kampen te bevoorraden. Een deel van de track werd ook gebruikt om de boomstammen naar het dal te transporteren. De meeste werden echter door waterstroom naar beneden gespoeld na het openen van de vele dammen. Meer info hier: KAURI

Tiritiri Matangi Island

This was an excellent trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island, a nature reserve just off the coast of Whangaparaoa. We were prepared for a big hike but had a relatively short walk with an excellent guide, Neil, who knew everything about the birds, shrubs and trees on the island and the history of it. We have seen a few rare New Zealand bird species:

Een mooi tripje naar Tiritiri Matangi eiland, een natuurreservaat vlakbij Whangaparaoa schiereiland. We dachten een flinke hike te maken maar het werd een makkelijke wandeling met een hele goede gids, Neil. Hij wist alles van de vogels, de heesters en de bomen op het eiland en de geschiedenis. We hebben een paar zeldzame Nieuw Zeelands vogelsoorten gezien: 

Bird species / vogelsoorten: Saddlebacks, Stitchbirds, Robin, Whitehead, Brown Teal (eend / duck), Kakariki, Kokako (blue cheeks, blauwe wangetjes), Australian Brown Quail and Tui of course ...

Bream Head

First day of Labour weekend we went to Bream Head, a tip east of Whangarei. Click here to see the hike pictures and track.

Eerste dag van een lang weekend (maandag is de "Dag van de Arbeid"). Een 6 uur durende wandeling in Bream Head, een tip ten oosten van Whangarei. Klik hier om de foto's en de route te bekijken.


 

Cape Reinga

Amy en ik zijn in het weekend helemaal naar het noorden gereden: Cape Reinga (toch nog 5 uur rijden). Het weer was redelijk net goed genoeg om comfortabel te kamperen. Tentje mee en op de noordelijkste camping van Nieuw Zeeland gestaan. Dit was geen Camping Municipal ... WC's van het type "gat in de grond" en alleen af en toe koud water (moest gekookt worden voor consumptie). Het was wel een prachtig plekje!

This weekend we drove all the way up to Cape Reinga, the most northern tip of New Zealand (still a 5 hr drive). The weather was reasonable to be able to camp comfortable. Our tent stood on the most northern camping of New Zealand. This was not a Camping Municipal (for whoever has been on a busy French camping) ... Toilets were just holes in the ground and only cold water not suitable for drinking was sometimes available (you could boil it before consumption). It was an awesome location!

Spring time! Het is lente!

Tramping / Hiking on Mount Auckland

Na veel weekenden met hevige regen konden we eindelijk eens een mooie wandeling maken op zaterdag. We hebben de melkschuimer ontdekt op onze koffiemachine en zijn de dag begonnen met een cappuccino. De tocht naar de top van Mount Auckland (ongeveer 25km buiten Auckland stad) ging door weilanden en door native bush met prachtige uitzichten. En aan het eind van de dag een bier met pizza en kumara frites. 

After many weekends with serious rainfall we finally had a nice sunny day to climb Mount Auckland on Saturday. We have discovered the milk frother on our coffee machine and started the day with a cappuccino. The trip to the top of Mount Auckland went through paddocks and native bush giving us some beautiful vistas. And of course beer and pizza at the end of the day, accompanied with a bowl of kumara fries.
